On July 26, 1956, President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt nationalised the Suez Canal, a vital link in the world’s shipping lanes that had previously been administered by the Anglo-French Suez Canal Company. On October 29, the first waves of a joint Israeli, French, and British attack, agreed in secret earlier that month, struck Egyptian territory.
