Paul Ferdinando (Alias Charles Carrington)
Gilbert contacted me through the Ferdinando
Forum. Gilbert is related through the Ashley line and has kindly provided me
with recent updates to his side of the family tree. He also sprung a surprise!
“Paul Harry was in fact the boss of my
grand-father James Alfred ASHLEY (the son of Frances Charlotte Ferdinando).
James had been a clerk in his office in Paris where he learned French. That made
it possible to meet my grand mother Violette (of French origin)...to some
extent, if Paul Harry had not been there, I wouldn't have either !!
Information I have on "Oncle Ferdinando" may be considered as quite
'sulphurous' though.
Charles Carrington Real Name: Paul Ferdinando
Pseudonyms : Jean de Villiot. This pseudonym was also used by Hugues Rebell
(1867-1905) and Hector France (1837-1908).
Bio :Paris erotica and flagellantiana dealer, who dominated the English-language
field from about 1893 to 1917. Died 1922. His sales were largely to English
buyers. For a time English Customs prohibited "any books published by
Carrington." His activities were the source of considerable annoyance to
authorities both in France and England and his name figured prominently in the
1907 Parliamentary hearings on lotteries and indecent advertisements.”
Thanks Gilbert for this information a Skeleton in
the Cupboard at last, I thought we were all squeaky clean!
